Other Services

Community Mental Health Teams (CMHT)

CMHTs work with individuals experiencing mental health problems such as bipolar disorder, depression, severe anxiety or psychosis. CMHTs are staffed by mental health nurses, occupational therapists, psychiatrists and psychologists. These teams provide a variety of interventions, care and treatments, and can work with you as required to meet your needs.

Access into a CMHT comes by referral from your GP or Social Services.

Log on for assistance to the Heads Up website to locate some of the teams where you may be invited to attend, what do they do and which ones are in your area. Also see the Heads Up box below.

Some patients living in the Rutherglen/Cambulang Northern Corridor, which sits inside the NHSGGC boundary but geographically in Lanarkshire, have community mental health services provided by South Lanarkshire with in-patient services provided at Leverndale.

Forensic Services

Forensic mental health services are for people with a mental illness or learning disability who may be a risk to themselves or others because of their medical condition.  The Mental Health (Care and Treatment) (Scotland) Act 2003 places a requirement on NHS Boards to ensure that patients with a mental illness are able to be treated in facilities which meet their needs and are not subject to higher levels of security than they require.

Low secure inpatient mental health services are currently provided at Leverndale Hospital.

Medium secure care is delivered at Rowanbank, a specialist forensic mental health hospital.

Community outreach services are provided by clinicians working in specialist multidisciplinary teams to provide care in the community.

West of Scotland Mother Baby Unit

Perinatal Mental Health Service is based at Leverndale Hospital and provides services to women and families affected by severe mental illness during pregnancy and the first year after childbirth.  This service includes the Mother and Baby Mental Health Unit (MBU) as well as a Community Perinatal Mental Health Team (CPMHT) that provides outpatient clinics at multiple sites around the board area and psychiatric liaison services to maternity hospitals. This is Scotland’s first specialist perinatal mental health inpatient and community service for mothers, babies and their families.
