Psychology at SWMS

All patients attending the Specialist Weight Management Service have access to psychological interventions to help them lose weight.

Not everyone will see a psychologist however the Weight Management Programme uses behavioural approaches throughout to aid weight management.

Your health professional will help you decide if you need to access psychological support, or not, at your initial assessment.  Patients who have psychological issues related to their eating and weight such as anxiety, depression, disordered eating, body image issues or low self-esteem can access additional support.

Some patients need additional support before they can begin the Weight Management Programme. If so, they will be offered a Psychology Assessment. This ensures we are offering the best treatment possible.

After a psychology assessment we may:

  • advise attending Psychology Talks
  • recommend self-help materials
  • recommend therapy within SWMS
  • recommend attendance at a Disordered Eating Group
  • recommend support from another service
  • or no support may be required and they can access the standard programme
