Practical arrangements when someone dies in a hospital or care home

You may still colllect the personal belongings of your loved one from hospital or care home. However due to COVID-19, there are some restrictions:

  • A nominated family member or friend will be given instructions for collection of personal belongings from the hospital or care home.

  • Clothing will be sealed in a water soluble bag, and should be washed at home as outlined in this leaflet.

  • Food, drink and toiletries will be discarded for health and safety (infection control) reasons.

  • Books, cards, valuables and other personal possessions will be provided in a clear bag, tied and should not be opened for 7 days.

  • Solid items will be cleaned and placed inside a separate ‘clean’ belongings bag and can be opened.
