Alcohol and Drug Recovery Services update

We would like to provide assurance that alcohol and drug services in each locality across Greater Glasgow and Clyde continue to operate, but in light of the current situation, we have had to change the way in which we deliver these services.

Our priority is to deliver the following:

  • Retain service users in treatment, including prescribed medications
  • Support service users with social distancing, self-isolation and shielding when appropriate
  • Maintain contact in the context of reduced face-to-face appointments and social isolation
  • Safeguard delivery of life-saving clinical treatments
  • Provide support to new service users who are most in need

Current arrangements:

Due to the situation our total number of bases has reduced and some have had to relocate. Like many other health and social care services, we are minimising face-to-face contact at present. However, we will continue to be accessible through telephone and can arrange to see our service users as and when is required and possible.

During this time key-workers and care managers will strive to maintain service user contact via regular telephone checks.

Prescription duration and collection arrangements may change based on individual assessments, and prescriptions are being delivered direct to pharmacies.

If you are a patient of our services, you can help us by:

  • NOT presenting at the services in person for the moment unless you have been invited to do so by a staff member
  • Phoning your service with any queries about your alcohol and/or drug treatment and care. However, please keep this for when you really need it as we have a significantly reduced capacity in our teams at the moment
  • Informing us as quickly as possible if you are in self-isolation because you or a household member is symptomatic and if this results in you not being able to attend the pharmacy. We will do our best to make arrangements for your treatment to be delivered
  • Cooperating with the different local arrangements in your pharmacies
    Ensuring you take your treatment as it is prescribed

If you are seeking support for alcohol and drug problems, or are a concerned family member/carer, you should phone your local service (numbers below) in the first instance to discuss what support they can offer you in the current situation.

Injecting Equipment Provision and Naloxone:

  • All IEP pharmacies continue to provide injecting equipment, foil and Naloxone. Please take away enough to last you a week or two, if you can
  • The mobile van remains active and is located in Glasgow city centre at Cadogan Street every evening
  • The Glasgow Drug Crisis Centre is also open 24 hours for needle exchange

If an overdose occurs it is likely an ambulance will take longer to arrive, so you need to have Naloxone with you at all times.

You can still collect prescriptions and IEP equipment from pharmacies, however, pharmacy services are restricted on the number of people allowed into the pharmacy at any one time. Please be patient, respect staff and other patients, and maintain two metre social distancing at all times.
