Health & Safety Violence Reduction Education

These courses are for all staff except the following groups:

  • Mental Health / Learning Disabilities
  • Children and Young People Specialist Services,
  • Addictions / Forensics / Homeless

Guidance for attending Maybo SAFERcare Courses

Four levels of training are offered to staff; e-learning, half day, 1day for community workers and 1day combined theory and physical intervention course which will be tailored to the needs of specific staff groups. The appropriate course for particular staff groups should be based on risk assessment, taking into account the types, frequency and severity of incidents as well as the workplace environment, patient group and systems of work. The risk assessment and Training Needs Analysis forms can be obtained here. However in the absence of a full assessment the following information may provide guidance in choosing the most appropriate course.

1) LearnPro Managing Conflict and Challenging Behaviour

This course is suitable for staff who have minimal direct contact with patients or members of the public but may be exposed to occasional verbal abuse e.g. in reception areas where staff work behind desks or screens. This course focuses on risk assessment, self awareness, proactive service delivery and good communication skills. Access this training in the Specialist Subject section of LearnPro.

2) Half day Conflict Management Course

This course is suitable for staff who are site based and have direct contact with patients or members of the public but there is no history of physical assaults. This course focuses on risk assessment, self and spatial awareness, proactive service delivery, communication, defusing and calming and post incident considerations including tips when using telephone and personal safety. Dates for these courses are listed below.

3) One day Conflict Management Course (for Community/Lone workers)

This course is designed for staff working in the community with direct contact with patients/public. There is likely to be a history of verbal abuse but no (or very rarely) minor physical aggression incidents reported. This course covers risk assessment, self awareness, communication, signalling non-aggression, defusing and calming, high risk conflict and post incident considerations. Elements of lone working will be covered in this course as well as use of Datix system for reporting of incidents. Dates for these courses are listed below.

4) One day Conflict Management & Disengagement Course

This course is designed for staff working in higher risk areas where there is a history of physical aggression and challenging behaviour e.g. A&E, receiving wards, critical care, Rehabilitation and Assessment. It covers the theory aspects as for the conflict management course as well as learning and practicing physical intervention skills in dis-engaging from grips, grabs etc, rescuing others and assault avoidance. As these courses will be tailored to meet the needs of specific staff groups managers should contact the department directly to arrange.


Refresher Training

  • Staff who have been assessed as requiring conflict management training (theory only) should use the LearnPro Managing Conflict and Challenging Behaviour module as a refresher every 2 years.
  • Staff requiring physical intervention skills every 1-2years – please contact department directly to arrange.
  • Staff requiring only e-learning training should revisit this every 3-5 years depending on risk.
