Elderly mental health acute beds will remain at the Vale and in the longer term should be co-located with continuing care beds that would transferred in due course from Dumbarton Joint Hospital. This will ensure that older people with mental health conditions will be treated within a dedicated service.
Currently unused accommodation at the Vale’s Fruin Ward is to be modernised to support this arrangement.
NHSGGC proposed the closure of the Vale’s Christie Ward, which provides adult mental health inpatient services, because, it was argued, that newly introduced community-based services offered better and previously unavailable alternatives to inpatient admission. Admission rates to the ward were predicted to fall below levels of viability for ongoing provision of these services at the Vale – instead, it was proposed that any remaining patients requiring admission would be taken to the new Gartnavel Royal Hospital in Glasgow.
The Cabinet Secretary reserved judgement on this proposal and has asked for a report to be submitted to her in due course to confirm if the predicted fall in admissions has materialised.
