September 2010

Rainy overcast weather didn’t deter patients, families and carers from travelling to an industrial estate in the heart of Govan recently to view a very special display.  They were there to look at mock-ups of the bedrooms in the new adult and children’s hospitals.

The mock rooms were created in an empty industrial unit to give staff, patient groups and others the opportunity to see and comment on their proposed design.

Joeh McSherry, from the Royal Hospital For Sick Children Youth Panel, said: “I think this (creating the mock rooms) is a great idea. I’ve seen what the rooms are like on the architect’s plans, but you can’t really get a feel for it until you see it mocked up.

“It’s a lot bigger than I expected and is better than the old hospital’s rooms.”

Joeh was one of a group of young people from the Royal Hospital For Sick Children Youth Panel who travelled to Canada last year to view the Sick Children’s Hospital in Toronto. The ideas they gathered were brought back and fed into the planning process for the new hospital (to see their report and video of their study trip to Toronto, go to the Youth Panel's webpage).

Following the visit to the industrial unit, Joeh will now feedback his comments on what he thinks of the New Children’s Hospital’s rooms.
