Participation Standard

NHSGGC is striving to deliver a Quality service and our patients, families and carers are a critical part of that agenda. Delivering a Quality NHS means placing the patient, their carer and family right at the centre of all of our care, service delivery and health service decision-making.

It means understanding the patient experience, designing services that make the patient pathway easier and working with patients and the public to examine and improve our services. The Participation Standard helps us measure how well we are involving patients and the public in planning and providing health services.

The Participation Standard asks us to demonstrate that we have engaged with patients and the public in service planning, improvement and change.

To do this we worked with our public partners to select one case study of service change in 2010/2011. This case study would then be self-assessed using the Participation Standard and scrutinised by the Scottish Health Council who would use it to judge our performance as a Board.

A short list of six projects that had engaged with patients and the public in service planning, improvement and change was drawn up. Each was an excellent example of listening to patients, informing, engaging and responding to their interests and concerns.

A group of representatives from 16 of NHSGGC’s public and patient panels and staff, with over half of the participants being public partners, then met to pick just one of these projects to represent NHSGGC in the Participation Standard.
