2016 Winners

On the evening of 7th November 2016 staff gathered to celebrate the achievements of colleagues as we announced this year's Chairman’s Award winners and the Facing The Future Together overall award winners at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Glasgow. Two new prizes were awarded for the first time, the William Cullen prizes for Innovation and for Teaching, in conjunction with the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh.

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde Chairman, John Brown said

"Welcome to the 2016 Celebrating Success Award’s Dinner – the highlight of the NHSGGC calendar and a chance to recognise some of the most outstanding examples of NHS staff performance.

This is the seventh year of the Chairman’s Awards but it is my first time to preside over the proceedings and chair the judges panel. 

Tonight there are three winners in each of the categories – two silver and one gold. In truth, there were so many fantastic entries across the range of categories, we could have selected a dozen winners in each…such was the quality of entry. 

This is hugely encouraging for myself and the rest of the Board – and indeed the senior management team of NHSGGC and the Scottish NHS as it showcases the true quality of our workforce and their commitment to delivering the very best in patient care.

I am also happy to announce that the judging panel agreed to present a Special Award of Excellence which really captured the spirit of the NHS core values by putting patients at the heart of everything we do. 

Tonight will also see the presentation of the inaugural NHSGGC William Cullen Prize for excellence in medical teaching and for medical service innovation. This new prestigious element to our Celebrating Success event results from a collaboration with the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh.

1. Clinical Practice

This award recognises the importance of staff innovation which helps and improves everyday practices in the workplace and/or approaches to patient care.

WINNER –Scottish Parasite Diagnostic and Reference Laboratory

The laboratory team was the first UK NHS laboratory to introduce a rapid, highly sensitive National Molecular Acanthamoeba Detection Service resulting in significant improvements to the outcome for Acanthamoeba keratitis patients.



2. Improving Health

Commending staff who have a Healthy Working Lives idea or implemented an initiative to improve healthy eating, smoking cessation or improving mental health.


InS:PIRE is a multidisciplinary project based at Glasgow Royal Infirmary which has successfully addressed the problems which can often affect patients following an admission to intensive care. 




3. International Service

This award recognises staff who have travelled overseas to provide healthcare to people in a in a war torn or third world country.

WINNER – John McGarrity

John has been heavily involved in identifying and arranging the shipping of surplus medical and general equipment to a new children’s unit in Malawi.  In addition, John will fly out to Malawi later this month to oversee the distribution of the equipment and train local staff.




4. Nursing

This award recognises nurse(s) who demonstrate the best qualities of patient care and the ethos of nursing. 


This team responded to a large fire in the early hours one morning. Despite being faced with immense danger, the staff acted with professionalism and their response was superb. They clearly knew their drill which ensured that no patients or staff came to harm.




5. Patient Centred Care

For staff from different departments, directorates or services, who are working together in new and co-operative ways to improve the way we deliver services to our patients. 

WINNER – Tom Chalmers

Tom has demonstrated that someone who has used our services can make a significant contribution to the quality of mental health services.  He challenges stigma associated with mental health and has been a very positive role model for clients by sharing some of his own recovery journey which led to employment in the NHS.

Tom was unable to attend the event so Katrina Phillips, Head of Mental Health and Addictions at Renfrewshire HSCP collected the award on his behalf.




6. Using Resources Better

Specifically for staff who have increased efficiencies in the way they work or deliver services more effectively.

WINNER – SPHERE Bladder and Bowel Service

The project developed two community-based clinics to determine TPTNS effectiveness and cost benefit for a general continence population compared to standard treatment. Clinical and cost outcomes over one year showed TPTNS is safe, low-cost, dignified, non-invasive and simple to use and teach.




7.  Volunteer

Recognising members of the public/staff who provide outstanding help and support through volunteering. People who go that extra mile, contributing tirelessly for the benefit of others.

WINNER – Bert Muir

Bert has been a Therapet volunteer for 11 years and has dedicated over 4500 hours of his own time, providing a little four-legged therapy and companionship to animal lovers. Bert’s golden retriever Skye provides a soft and gentle tactile experience, allowing patients to stroke her and gain the proven positive benefits from stroking a pet.   



8. Special Judges Award of Excellence

The judges panel were so impressed by this entry they agreed, for only the second time in the six years that the Chairman’s Awards have been running, to make a special award of excellence. The winner will be announced on the night.

WINNER – Jade Gilmore

Staff nurse Jade Gilmore was singled out by the judging panel for special recognition for her outstanding care, compassion and decisive life-saving intervention. Jade's concern for a patient when they didn't show up for a regular appointment saved his life.  Jade went above and beyond to locate the patient and the patient is in no doubt he wouldn’t be alive today had she not acted the way she did.
