Scott picks up our first Chairman’s Award

Tackling Recovery, a 12 week football coaching project for young men with mental health issues devised by Scott Smart, senior occupational therapist has scooped our first Chairman’s Award.

Twelve high quality entries were received this year however it was decided that the Tackling Recovery project was an outstanding show of partnership working incorporating general health and fitness improvements as well as specifically targeting mental health issues.

The project organised by NHSGGC alongside Queens Park Football Club and the Scottish Football Association offered individuals the chance to take part in football coaching sessions, skills development and match play.

Ten men aged between 18 - 35 completed the course with 60% recognising an improvement in both general health (including mental health) and self esteem.  Through physical health screening 90% of clients showed a reduction in blood pressure, a reduction in resting pulse and an improvement in timed sprints.

After the 12-week programme finished one participant said: “I have really enjoyed being part of the Tackling Recovery programme.  I feel sad that the twelve week programme has come to an end as my confidence and self esteem has really improved and I will miss all the friends that I have made over the weeks.”

Given the undoubted clinical effectiveness of Tackling Recovery, Scott and his colleagues hope to pursue future funding options to repeat the programme as a recognised treatment plan.  If funded, it is hoped to open the programme up to both males and females with no upper age limit.

Tackling Recovery was funded by NHSGGC Mental Health Partnership Endowment Fund.  The Training Kit was sponsored by NHSGGC Smokefree Services.

The Chairman’s Award was presented to Scott, his colleagues Pauline Clare Orr, physiotherapist, Lynne Houston registered mental nurse, Stuart Sharp national development manager – disability for the Scottish Football Association Limited and George Watson head of community for Queens Park Football Club at the annual review by Cabinet Secretary for Health and Wellbeing Nicola Sturgeon and Chairman Andrew Robertson.
