The NHS offers breast screening to reduce the number of women who die from breast cancer. Screening does this by finding breast cancers at an early stage when they are too small to see or feel. As part of the Scottish Breast Screening Programme, the West of Scotland Breast Screening Service invites all women aged between 50 and 70 approximately every three years for breast screening.
The national breast screening programme was paused for almost 6 months in 2020 at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. This has resulted in longer than normal waits for clients within age range for routine breast screening. Unfortunately at this time self-referrals to the breast screening service are not being accepted therefore clients aged over 71 are encouraged to seek the assistance of their GP should they have any breast concerns. Any change to this will be announced nationally.
When you get your appointment will depend on which GP practice you are registered with, which may mean that you are invited at different times to other women your age. You should get your first invitation before your 53rd birthday. If you haven't, please contact your local screening centre (telephone number above). Please also contact your local screening centre if you have moved house and are concerned that you may have missed an invitation for screening.
Being breast aware is about getting to know your own body so that you can spot any changes to your breasts early on. Remember you can develop breast cancer at any time. This includes the time in between breast screening appointments.
It is your choice whether to have breast screening or not, for more information about breast screening in Scotland: www.nhsinform.co.uk/screening/breast.
