An application to open a new NHS community pharmacy needs the approval of the local Health Board (HB). These applications are governed by regulations made by the Scottish Government. Only certain parties are allowed to own a pharmacy and these are defined in the Medicines Act i.e. Pharmacists; partnerships that include a pharmacist or, a corporate body (i.e. companies) who are registered at Companies House and who have a Superintendent Pharmacist.
Before an application can be made, there are two important stages for the applicant and the HB to jointly work through. These are Pre-application and Joint Consultation.
