A competent healthcare practitioner will decide on the most appropriate type of tube to be used.

When deciding on the type of tracheostomy tube required there are a number of different features to consider eg. cuffed or uncuffed etc. Although in the following section this has been broken down into the principles of management of each  specific feature, the clinical needs of the patients may require a combination of these features.
