Excellence in Care and The Care Assurance System

Excellence is Care (EiC) was commissioned by the Scottish Government in response to the recommendations from the Vale of Leven enquiry. It is a national approach that aims to ensure people have confidence they will receive high quality care, no matter where they receive care in NHS Scotland. Central to this programme is the development of quality measures for nursing and midwifery and the visualisation of this data which can be viewed at ward, board and national level.

NHSGGC have agreed to use the existing Care Assurance System (CAS) framework to deliver the EiC initiative. CAS provides a clear vision for person centred care, incorporating both self-assessment and external peer review using the Combined Care Assurance Audit tool to measure the wards level of performance against the agreed Care Assurance Standards. In addition, electronic data is captured within the Care Assurance Improvement Resource (CAIR) to support both CAS and EiC.

In your ward or clinical area find out who your link persons are. Link persons are subject specific champions who have been assigned a standard. Link persons have a detailed knowledge of the resources, measurement and associated ongoing quality improvements for each CAS standard. The link person can help you enhance your knowledge of each standard.
