The Open University Healthcare Support Worker (HCSW) Pathway

Are you a HCSW interested in becoming a Registered Nurse with an Open University BSc (HONS) qualification for Adult, Learning Disability or Mental Health Nursing?

The Open University and NHSGGC will be running information sessions regarding this pathway for the September 2020 intake.

To be eligible to apply, you must:

  • Work 26+ hours a week in a permanent post;
  • Have 12 years’ experience in full time education (including all school years);
  • Core communication skills at SCQF Level 5 or Standard Grade English (passed at credit level) or National 5 (or the equivalent) in English;
  • Core numeracy skills at SCQF Level 5 or Standard Grade Mathematics (passed at credit level) or National 5 (or the equivalent) in Mathematics or Arithmetic;
  • Good character and good health; and
  • Have your line manager’s support.

Widening Access to Nursing

The Open University will be providing a ‘Widening Access to Nursing’ programme funded by the Scottish Government.

This is an excellent opportunity for Health Care Support Workers or Social Care Workers to study module K101 ‘An introduction to health and social care’ and a numeracy course at SCQF Level 5 which together meet the numeracy and literacy requirements for a nursing degree programme: OU BSc Nursing (Hons) programme.

Both modules are delivered fully online with dedicated tutor support.
