Leadership, Effectiveness and Development (LEaD) Programme

Following on from the positively evaluated ‘Making a Difference’ programme, the NMAHP Governance and Regulation Team in partnership with NHS Education for Scotland Nursing and Midwifery Practice Educators have developed a refreshed programme. Around 600 band 5 & 6 practitioners attended Making a Difference which looked at how to make improvements in the cultures we work in. The newly revised programme now called Leadership, Effectiveness and Development (LEaD) is aimed at registered nurses and midwives board wide from band 5 to 7.

The focus of the programme will be on exploring principles and themes relating to leadership. The topics and contents focus on emotional intelligence and developing resilience, supervision and coaching, team dynamics and developing effective networks. This reflects key elements outlined in the Chief Nursing Officer’s ‘Nursing 2030’ vision. The programme is delivered in a workshop format, one full day in the Teaching and Learning Centre on the Queen Elizabeth campus and aims to be as participatory and interactive as possible. This will allow practitioners to explore the key themes in relation to local practice as well as share experience and learn from peers.

The content is underpinned by national resources such as the GoodPractice Toolkit and Managing Matters giving practitioners an opportunity to connect to wider information and perspectives.  These resources draw on information, tools and experiences from a variety of sources enabling learning from the private and third sectors in addition to health. The vision for the LEaD programme is that it will form the foundation layer of a leadership pathway for registrants.

The programme was launched spring 2019, delivered 21st June 2019. LEaD facilitation was supported by colleagues from the Acute Practice Education Facilitator Team. A total of 40 registered staff attended from a variety of clinical areas,100% of attendees evaluated the programme content and delivery positively. The electronic evaluation can be accessed HERE.
