Scottish Microbiology Reference Laboratories, Glasgow (SMiRL) Three Year Review

There was a three-year review carried out on all Scottish National Reference Laboratories during 2013. The Reference laboratory Working Group (RLWG), which acts as an advisory to the Health Protection Scotland (HPS) / National Services Scotland (NSS) commissioning team, reviewed information (provided in annual laboratory reports) which provided an indication of the quality of the services provided. As part of the review process, a survey of a representative group of users of the reference services (including all members of the Scottish Microbiology and Virology Network) was undertaken. Feedback on the services provided was collected via a questionnaire. The full report can be accessed via the HPS web-site.

Feedback from users

The only issue raised for the Scottish Microbiology Reference Laboratories, Glasgow from the user survey was a request for further development of electronic requesting / reporting.

SMiRL Response

Electronic requesting /reporting has been introduced in some of the Specialist and Reference Laboratories within Public Health England, including the Clostridium difficile Reference Network (CDRN). SMiRL have been in discussions with HPS regarding electronic requesting / reporting in Scottish Reference Laboratories. The benefits include: -
• Capture of more complete / accurate epidemiological data for each sample submitted for typing.
• Elimination of the submission of inappropriate samples.
• The ability to plan the laboratory workload and respond quickly to outbreaks.
• Reports delivered faster to users, rather than via the mail.
• Electronic reports available via portal and Sci.

In addition the use of electronic reporting has been raised within NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde IT department as a priority issue. Discussions have taken place about the appropriateness of sending reports electronically to secure Email addresses or directly to other Health Board’s LIMS systems.
