Freestyle Libre

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde has approved the use of the FreeStyle Libre® system for patients with type 1 diabetes fulfilling certain criteria. The decision acknowledges the potential positive impact that this device may have for patient care and recognises that the delay in reaching this decision has been a concern for many of our patients.

Freestyle Libre is a continuous glucose sensing technology which allows people with diabetes to obtain glucose results without pricking their finger. The system comprises of an adhesive sensor (which is worn for 2 weeks at a time) and a reader (which is swiped over the sensor to obtain glucose results).

We have agreed clinical criteria taking into account guidance provided by the Scottish Diabetes Group, the Association of British Clinical Diabetologists (ABCD), Diabetes UK, NICE and existing submissions from diabetes Managed Clinical Networks to health boards across Scotland. Not all patients will meet these criteria and the device may not be suitable in every instance. This is a specialist clinical decision made with the patient and their hospital consultant.

For most patients, the decision on whether this device will be suitable will be made at their next specialist appointment at hospital.

We recognise that there are some patients who may gain significant clinical benefit and should be offered the device without further delay. Patients who fall into this category will be contacted over the next few weeks with advice on what to do next.
