Impacted Cerumen

• Impacted ear wax is common in this population.

• Congenital structural anomalies of the ear, and ear-poking behaviours contribute.

• This causes/exacerbates hearing impairment.

• Many persons with learning disabilities cannot communicate this additional disability.

• Check with otoscopy, then treat initially as for the general population, if required. If softening oil is prescribed, arrange to recall for further otoscopy to check drops have actually been used/cerumen cleared.
