A full GP Out of Hours Service based at the Vale of Leven Hospital will be phased in from the end of January 2021.
The new arrangement has been made possible following a number of positive discussions between NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) and local GPs who will staff the service alongside the hospital’s integrated care GP team (ICGP).
The ICGP team will also continue to deliver other vital out of hours medical cover across the Vale, including the Medical Assessment Unit, the Minor Injuries Unit, the admissions ward and the inpatient wards.
The first phase of the expansion of the Out of Hours Service will be the re- introduction of an evening service (6pm – 11pm) from Monday to Thursday, in addition to the continuation of the current overnight provision, which is provided seven days a week (11pm – 8am). Plans are underway to seek to provide the service for the full out of hours period from the end of March 2021, providing appropriate staffing measures can be put in place. The fully reinstated service will cover evenings, overnight and weekends.
The arrangement reached with GPs and the acute team, alongside the earlier introduction of service innovations including an appointment only system and the integration of Near Me for digital and telephone appointments, has been crucial in helping ensure the creation of a sustainable and safe long-term model for GP Out of Hours Services.

“We know how important the GP Out of Hours Service is to the local community and we are extremely thankful to both the integrated care team at the Vale, who are able to deliver excellent quality care across a range of services, and our local GP leaders who have been working hard to establish arrangements with GPs in the area. Their support means we’re in position to engage with local GPs to come and join the service and to seek to ensure we have a full, robust and sustainable long-term proposition for GP Out of Hours.
“ In line with other health boards, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde operates an appointments system for GP Out of Hours Services, and they should always call NHS24 on 111 to make an appointment.”
In line with the other Centre based GP Out of Hours services, through 2019 there were sustainability issues and the service was subject to ad-hoc closures which became more frequent towards the end of the year. The Vale of Leven Centre based evening and weekend daytime and evening GP Out of Hours service was suspended when the Board moved to business continuity arrangements in February 2020. An overnight service has been provided continuously during this time, as has the home visiting service.
