Driving their way to a greener, smilier future

Tuesday, September 3, 2019

Specialist dental nurses in Greater Glasgow and Clyde are gearing up to go green as they take their Childsmile message around the city.

The Childsmile teams, who travel around NHSGGC schools and nurseries to carry out their prevention work, have been participating in local awareness training in the use of the Childsmile’s new fleet of electric vans.

The Childsmile teams – who between them provided fluoride-varnish applications on an amazing 46,000 occasions last year – will soon be the proud drivers of all-electric vans, which allow them to transport their mobile dental equipment from school to school.

“The driving environment in an electric van is quite different to that of a manual van and of course there’s the charging element too,” said NHSGGC’s Interim Clinical Service Manager for Primary Care Dental Services, Susan Frew.

“Some of our staff seemed a bit anxious about it at first and I think they were worried about running out of charge. This awareness training has been great in putting their minds at ease and reinforcing the greener message, they now just can’t wait for the new vans to arrive.”

NHSGGC’s Corporate Transport Manager Paul Reid explained the environmental benefits. He said: “Once up-and-running, these new vans will have the benefit of being C02 emission free. Not only is that great for the staff and pupils, but for the city itself.

“We’ve also thought about safety and have had an engine noise ‘added’ to the vans to make them sound like normal vans that the children will hear,” added Paul.

Kerry McCafferty, an Extended Duties Dental Nurse in the team said: “It was great to learn about charging the vehicle and I even found out it is able to charge itself as it is driving along! Really clever and I can’t wait to get started. I am sure they will look great.”
