A service only established in 2016 has been nominated for a prestigious Nursing Times Awards 2019.
The nurse-led paediatric continence service provides support to children from six months to 16 years suffering from constipation and bedwetting (Nocturnal Enuresis).
Constipation is estimated to affect at least a third of all children and accounts for around a quarter of all paediatric outpatient appointments. It also accounts for the second highest presentation to emergency departments.
Bedwetting affects around 9.4% of children in the UK with a higher incidence in children with a physical and/or learning disability.
The continence service provides specialist knowledge and education to children and their families experiencing either of these conditions. By providing the support needed less children attend the emergency department and their quality of life is greatly improved.
Donna Hunter, Professional Nurse Advisor, Specialist Children's Services, said “The team have worked extremely hard to make this service so successful.
“Their dedication has ensured children, young people and families can access a high quality evidence based service at locations across all of GGC.
“This recognition is well deserved.”
