Children's Hospital Turns Into 'Boogie Wonderland'

Tuesday, May 7, 2019

Dancing, as part of a physical activity package for patients with respiratory conditions, is being offered at the Royal Hospital for Children (RHC).

Warren Gordon, a technical instructor with the physiotherapy team and a passionate dancer, has been making some shapes with the patients and loving every minute of it.

He said:  “Part of my role is to offer physical activity to patients who have spent some time in hospital with respiratory problems as part of their rehabilitation before they are discharged.

“Being a passionate dancer I thought it would be a great idea to offer dance to the patients.  So far I have had three patients, boys and girls who already do dance in their spare time take up my offer.

“They range from seven years old to 14 years old and it has been a pleasure working with them.

“I encourage them to choose music they like and for two weeks we work on the choreography with input from them and their families.  We then film the final dance and post on social media.  The response to the videos has been overwhelming with 165,000 views and more than a 1,000 re-tweets.

“My plan is to encourage dancing for those patients who have no dance training to join me as part of their physical activity.”

Barry Johnstone is one of the physiotherapist team who works alongside Warren.  He added:  “These dance sessions are good because some of the kids are in their rooms for most of the day and getting them active, whether it be dance or another activity, really makes a difference.”

Warren, who is 33 years old and lives in Paisley, has been with the physiotherapy team since last August.
