Video consultations are now part of bi-monthly clinics for patients diagnosed with rheumatology in the Western Isles.
Clinicians based in Glasgow are working with healthcare professionals in the Western Isles to deliver video consultations to patients preventing them unnecessary travel to mainland Scotland.
The patient attends their local hospital for the video call where they are supported by a local healthcare professional throughout the consultation. To date 43 patients have now benefitted from this new approach.
William Edwards, Director of eHealth, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, said: “This is one of a number of virtual consultation projects that we have introduced this year.
“This new approach is part of the expanding use of video consultations across hospital and community services and we are delighted to be at the forefront of revolutionising healthcare in Scotland.
“Previously, patients in the Western Isles who suffer from rheumatology had no other option except to travel to Glasgow to be seen by a specialist rheumatologist. Now they can go to their local hospital have their appointment with the specialist consultant and be back home the same day.”
Rheumatology is a subspecialty in internal medicine and paediatrics that deals with the joints, soft tissues, autoimmune diseases and heritable connective tissue disorders.
