Prisoners at HMP Low Moss are Helping Bring the Outside In for Elderly Patients

Tuesday, August 28, 2018

Patients and staff at the Langlands Unit on the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital campus have thanked prisoners from Low Moss Prison after they custom made a bench and large planter pot for wards 54 and 55 in the unit.

The unit provides medicine for the elderly unit with specialist rehabilitation services for older people and with help from HMP Low Moss and Dobbies Garden Centre at Braehead, the staff have been able to bring the outside in with garden areas in the recreational rooms in both wards.

Bethany Gale, Activities Co-ordinator for both wards said:  “A lot of the patients in wards 54 and 55 have told me they the thing they miss the most is a garden so we wanted to create an area that the patients can go and sit or water plants and feel like they are in a garden area.

“I contacted Low Moss Prison who I know make benches and asked if they would be willing to donate one to the unit.  Paul, one of the prison coaches was brilliant and said they would be happy to make us one.

“Within a couple of weeks they had not only made a bench but also a big bright square planter which they had painted and put on our NHSGGC logo.

“They have also painted the bench with the words ‘Welcome to the garden’ which is lovely.  What is especially impressive is that both the bench and planter were made from off cuts of wood which would otherwise have been thrown away.

“This really makes a difference to the patients and we are extremely grateful to both HMP Low Moss and Dobbie who have donated all the plants.”

Sharanne Findlay, Governor in Charge at HMP Low Moss said:  "I am delighted that those in our care at Low Moss have been able to contribute in this way, and to make a difference to the lives of older people and others undergoing rehabilitation at the Langlands Unit."
