The team behind the InS:PIRE programme were visited by Alison Thewliss, MP for Glasgow Central, today to learn about InS:PIRE, the award-winning rehabilitation and support initiative for Intensive Care Unit (ICU) patients and their families
Housed at Glasgow Royal Infirmary, the InS:PIRE programme supports survivors of critical illness and their carers who may experience physical, psychological and social problems following a stay in intensive care.
The programme has supported 180 patients and 140 carers since it began in 2014.
Patients create personal goals and, along with their carers, receive psychological support aimed at coping skills. They are offered five weekly half day sessions where they attend an individual review with a consultant and nurse.
They receive support from a pharmacist and physiotherapist as well as other professionals where required. Participants have the opportunity to interact informally in a social cafe with volunteers, some of whom have experienced a stay in Intensive Care.
This is the first programme to place specific emphasis on recovery for family members.
Ms Thewliss met Dr Joanne McPeake; Dr Tara Quasim; John Stuart, North director; Jane Beresford, health improvement lead; and Sarah Erskine of Citizens Advice.
Dr Quasim said: “Intensive Care patients can have persistent physical and psychological problems as a direct result of the intensive care stay which can impact all aspects of their life.”
Dr McPeake said: “It was great to share the work we’re doing to our local MP. This is an innovative programme which is improving the health and wellbeing of patients who have been discharged from intensive care units and is helping them recover and return to work.
“Financial difficulties are common in critical illness survivors and their families, so we have worked in partnership with Glasgow North West Citizens Advice Bureau to offer support with welfare benefits, housing, employment, bills arrears and carer entitlements.”
During the visit, Ms Thewliss also heard about the work of the Financial Inclusion service. In the last financial year the service referred 5,039 patients to the money advice services resulting in financial gains of more than £9.4 million for patients.
There are six services across NHSGGC hospitals which patients can attend or advisors will meet them in wards if more appropriate.
