Scotland’s largest health board is moving ahead with ambitious plans to create around 50 modern apprenticeships for young people over the next 12 months.

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde’s Modern Apprenticeship scheme will offer young people between the ages of 16 and 24, the opportunity to work and learn at the same time as developing skills for their future employment.

Head of workforce planning and development Lyndsay Lauder explained: "The NHS offers a wealth of opportunities for young apprenticeships with a range of careers open to them. We have identified a number of posts that will match Modern Apprenticeship frameworks from finance assistants to clinical support workers, plumbers and electricians to youth workers and nursing assistants to name only a few.

"The idea is that young people will apply for apprenticeship which will last between two and four years depending on the job role. During their employment they will undertake a full accredited training programme which will equip them with the knowledge and skills required for the job.

"All being well at the end of the apprenticeship the young person will be offered a position in NHSGGC appropriate to their training."

Health Secretary Alex Neil said: "This is a fantastic example of how the health service can help to create local jobs and opportunities for local people.

"The NHS can offer a range of opportunities for young people looking for work, and by training apprentices within the health service, we can help to nurture young talent, and invest in training the workforce of the future."

The Modern Apprenticeship scheme is supported by NHSGGC and Skills Development Scotland (SDS).

NHSGGC will begin advertising for the apprenticeships in March / April 2013.

We have identified four areas that we believe will offer young people a wide range of opportunities and will help NHSGGC prepare for future skill needs.

These are:

Health – roles such as nursing assistants, youth workers, clinical support workers

Business administration – administrative support worker, customer service support, trainee accounts technician

Engineering – electrician, plumber, engineer

Life sciences – clinical physics support worker, healthcare science assistant

Lyndsay added: "NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde has many exciting careers for young people. We are an equal opportunities employer welcoming applications from people in all walks of life into an organisation which offers an excellent range of benefits."
