The Victoria Infirmary in Glasgow has received a generous donation of books and Kobo e-readers from WHSmith and WHSmith Trust.
Ten hospitals across the UK were chosen to receive more than 3000 books in total and the Victoria Infirmary was among the lucky recipients. These are hospitals which have a WHSmith store. The books are there to supplement existing patient library resources, or create new libraries, for patients.
Glasgow Victoria Infirmary will receive 300 new books to refresh the donation previously made by WHSmith in 2010.
Voluntary service manager Bryan Bannerman said: “We are delighted that WHSmith has once again chosen the Victoria Infirmary to benefit from this generous donation. It is a fantastic initiative and the books have been used and enjoyed by many of our patients, so it’s great to receive some more books to share with our patients and their families.”
The WHSmith Trust is an independent charity that aims to promote literacy and support the local communities in which WHSmith staff and customers live and work.
Chair of the WHSmith Trust Sarah Heath said: “WHSmith has a strong presence in the hospital sector, and the staff within our hospital stores often become a core part of hospital life. We were keen to find ways to support Hospital Trusts and discovered that whilst books can understandably be overlooked in hospital budgets, they can play an important role in patients’ care. We are delighted that this initiative helps support both of the WHSmith Trust’s principle objectives – supporting local communities and promoting education and lifelong learning.”
Manager of the WHSmith store at the Victoria Brian McDevitt added: “We’re really excited to have the opportunity to support our local hospital and help to update library facilities for patients. It’s a great way for the staff at WHSmith to get involved with their local community and help promote literacy.”
