Barrhead Health and Care Centre has won ‘Public Building of the Year’ in the Scottish Design Awards.
The £18 million building which is jointly owned by NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde and East Renfrewshire Council opened in April 2011. It was designed by Avanti Architects, and beat off competition for the top title from The Royal Commonwealth Pool in Edinburgh, Clydesmill Community Fire Station and Bathgate Partnership Centre.
The centre brings together health and social work services under the one roof serving more than 20,000 local residents in state-of-the-art, fit for purpose facilities.
The partnership to develop the joint building was developed alongside the highly successful East Renfrewshire Community Health and Care Partnership (CHCP). The CHCP is one of only a few partnerships in Scotland which manage local authority social care services and local NHS services within a single structure.
Barrhead Health and Care Centre houses:
• Three GP practices, serving approximately 21,000 people
• Two general dental practices
• Adult mental health services
• Older adults day services
• Sexual health services
In addition, the centre provides a base for a number of community services including district nursing, health visiting, the older people’s team and home care.
NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde chairman Andrew Robertson said: “We are delighted that the Scottish Design Awards has recognised the Barrhead Health and Care Centre with its Public Building of the Year award.
“We have always said the building was one we hoped both patients and staff would be proud of, bringing together health and social work services in a state-of-the-art, fit for purpose facility to serve the people of Barrhead. This award is an acknowledgement of that which is very pleasing.”
Cllr Lafferty, East Renfrewshire convener for social work and health said: “We are delighted the new Barrhead Health and Care Centre building and the architects who worked to make their vision a reality have been recognised for their high standards of design with this accolade from the Scottish Design Awards.”
