The Inverclyde Physical Disability Rehabilitation Unit has been honoured with a prestigious NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde Chairman’s Award for their excellence in nursing.

As a team they recognise no boundaries when it comes to helping their patients and one another and it is this approach which earned them the top accolade.

The team were presented with the coveted award by Cabinet Secretary for Health, Alex Neil, at a special ceremony in Glasgow.

Senior Charge Nurse, Morag Leighton, said: “We are all absolutely delighted to be getting recognition for the job that we do through this award, it’s nice to get a pat on the back.

“We are a small team working on a ward for patients who are normally under 65 years of age with acquired disabilities.

“For example they have multiple sclerosis, head injuries or other injuries as a result of road traffic accidents and many have complex issues.

“There are only eight beds and so we all very quickly form close relationships not only with patients and their families, but also with other team members.”

The rapport with patients is rewarded by glowing feedback and the culture in the unit is very much patient need orientated.

Collaboration with medical staff is also excellent, smoothing the way for them to plan, monitor and modulate treatment plans because nursing feedback is quick, thorough and insightful.

NHSGGC Chairman, Andrew Robertson, said; “We are in the third year of these awards and I am impressed and delighted with the enthusiasm shown by staff, patients and their relatives in identifying worthy nominees.

“The nursing team at the Inverclyde Physical Disability Rehabilitation Unit offer their patients the highest quality of nursing care and the judges and I were hugely impressed by their enthusiasm and total commitment to their patients.”
