Midwives at the Vale of Leven Community midwifery unit (CMU) have been recognised by UNICEF for their dedication, professionalism and valuable work with new mothers.

The CMU was awarded the maximum score in an independent audit by UNICEF assessing the support offered to mums for breastfeeding.

The UNICEF Baby Friendly Initiative has rigorous standards for its breastfeeding accreditation and the maternity units had to meet a strict set of criteria to ensure a high standard of care for mums and babies.

The Vale of Leven CMU was awarded 100% in all categories.

Senior charge midwife at the Vale of Leven Marie Whelan said:  “This is excellent news for the CMU.  It’s especially satisfying to have the hard work of all the staff acknowledged by an external audit.

“The UNCEF award looks at good clinical practice and ensures that women receive enough information to ensure that can make an informed choice for themselves about breastfeeding.”

The CMU has been UNICEF accredited in the past, but this is the first time it has been awarded 100%.

The Vale of Leven CMU is the second CMU within NHSGGC to receive 100% accreditation. Inverclyde Royal Hospital was the other.
