As Sexually Transmitted Infections continue to rise, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) is making access to free condoms easier than ever.

A new condom distribution service will see free condoms available throughout Greater Glasgow and Clyde at a wide range of venues.

The new service, simply named Free Condoms, will replace the previous C-Card scheme and will be easy to access with no need for individuals to register or give any personal details. Anyone who lives or works in the Greater Glasgow and Clyde area can access the new Free Condom service with over 70 distribution points including GPs’ surgeries, community centres, colleges and some high street pharmacies.

Providing free condoms to anyone who needs them will help to reduce transmission of HIV, sexually transmitted infections and unintended pregnancy rates in Greater Glasgow and Clyde.

Trends in recent years have indicated a rise in HIV diagnosis across NHSGGC and sexually transmitted infection (STI) rates have also show an upward trend.

In Greater Glasgow and Clyde rates for some STIs, including Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea, are the highest in Scotland, particularly in the under 25 age group.

Alongside these figures Greater Glasgow and Clyde has a teenage pregnancy rate higher than the overall Scottish figure with some areas in Greater Glasgow and Clyde having rates considerably higher than the Scottish average.

The new Free Condom service has the campaign message ‘Ready to Roll’, and with advertising planned on billboards, bus interiors, bar media, online and hand to hand distribution it is hoped that the message will reach our key audience groups.

There is also a dedicated website with information on where to access free condoms, who can access free condoms, why its important to use condoms and links to general advice on sexual health. The website can be found at

Sarah Graham, Manager, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, said, “Sexual health is a clear priority for NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde.

“Our research suggested that people want a simple way to access free condoms across a variety of locations and venues. We have created a service that can provide Free Condoms simply - people don’t have to negotiate unnecessary barriers such as registering and providing personal details.

We hope to develop the service further in the coming months to increase the amount of venues available that people can access Free Condoms.

“It’s vital that we communicate the availability of Free Condoms. We hope this service will go some way in contributing to a reduction in STIs and inintended pregnancies in our local population.”
