Scotland largest health board is celebrating International Nurses Day on the 12th May by launching a dedicated web portal showcasing the proud history of nursing in Glasgow and Clyde and a call to Greater Glasgow and Clyde residents to nominate a nurse who they think deserves the Health Board’s prestigious Chairman’s Award.

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde’s (NHSGGC) web portal, in essence an on-line documentary charting how nursing has evolved over the past 60 years, can be accessed by nurses themselves, other NHSGGC staff and the public.

NHSGGC Director of Nursing, Rosslyn Crocket, who has written and recorded a foreword for the web portal, said: “The idea that we have come up with to celebrate this special day is one that staff and the public will see hopefully as novel and interesting. We have decided to take a look back at nursing since start of the NHS. The reason for that is that there have been so many significant changes in that period of time.

“We have seen massive changes in the abilities and competencies of staff; their education, their training.

“If you look back at how things started and how they are now it's unbelievable.

“But we were also quite keen to look forward and the underlying theme in all that we are looking at is this: No matter how advanced nursing and the art of nursing has become, the absolute underpinning value is that of caring for patients, families and their local communities. That's another reason we want to celebrate International Nurses Day.”

The portal will be very interactive. Staff and other visitors to the site can not only learn about this history and find out more about modern nursing but they can also make comments.

The portal however is not the only way in which NHSGGC intends to celebrate international Nurses Day.

Rosslyn explained: “May 12 will also see the launch of the Annual Chairman's Awards. This is something that has been going on for a number of years, but this year for the first time, we have decided to have a special award for nursing. It will be awarded to a nurse or group of nurses who show the best qualities of patient care and the ethos of nursing. We want nominations for the award from the experts – our patients and their families, friends and carers. If you have received outstanding care from an individual nurse or team then we want to hear about your experiences and consider them for this award. Tell us how your nurses have made a difference to your care and wellbeing in hospital, at home or in the community.”

To nominate a special nurse who has gone that extra mile for you or to simply enjoy what the web portal has to offer visit:

The portal goes live tomorrow 12th May.
Nominations can also be made by telephoning 0800 027 7246.
