All planned inpatient gynaecology surgery services at the Southern General Hospital (SGH) will be temporarily moving to Glasgow Royal Infirmary (GRI) while engineering work to repair a major heating fault is carried out.
GRI’s Gynaecology Department is located within the Princess Royal Maternity (PRM) and an additional ward will be made available to accommodate patients and staff from the SGH.
Engineers at the SGH have been trying to fix the heating fault for a number of weeks however it is now apparent that the repair work required means that clinical services cannot be provided while this work is carried out.
The temporary service relocation will be effective from Monday 28th March 2011 and will not have any impact on the maternity services at either the SGH or PRM.
Kevin Hill, NHSGGC’s Director of Women’s and Children’s Services, said: “For a number of weeks we have been trying to work around the problem while engineers carried out their repair work. However this is not sustainable and we need to move gynaecology services to the GRI to ensure we minimise disruption to our patients as much as possible. I am confident this is the best solution for both patients and staff and it also means that engineers can get to the heart of the problem without having to work within a busy working clinical environment.
“This temporary move only affects planned surgical patients. The Southern’s gynaecology outpatient service will be unaffected and will continue as normal. Emergency gynaecology assessment will also remain available at SGH for patients who require urgent and immediate surgery however less urgent cases may be diverted to GRI.
“I would ask that our patients continue to bear with us as we strive to maintain the highest standards of service. I would like to thank our nurses, medical staff and other clinical and management teams at both sites for their efforts in making this temporary transfer happen while these essential works are carried out. ”
We will ensure that any patient directly affected by this change will be informed.
