Scotland’s biggest health board is playing its part in a new national scheme aimed at keeping people fit for work.

“Working Health Services Scotland”, a Fit for Work service funded by the Scottish Government and the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is officially launched today (September 1) in the NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) area.

The national one year pilot has been set up to help workers in small to medium sized businesses (less than 250 employees) who don’t have access to an occupational health service.

Individuals can self refer to the telephone-based case management service by dialling a freephone number 0800 0192211 and the aim is that early intervention which will help people struggling at work because of physical or mental health problems to stay at work, prevent sickness absence or enable a speedy return.

Michelle Dorothy, one of NHSGGC’s case managers explained that people are referred to physiotherapy, counselling, and occupational therapy as appropriate.

She went on: “Individuals are allocated approximately six sessions with the appropriate provider based on the initial assessment of need completed by the case manager, all of whom have a healthcare background, mainly as occupational therapists or nurses.

“Baseline assessments are carried out at the beginning and end of service provision in order to chart progress and we would expect most cases to be ongoing for approximately 12 weeks.

“Everyone who completes the programme can return at a later date if they feel that they need extra support.”
