Midwives at the IRH CMU are celebrating after being awarded top marks in an independent audit by UNICEF assessing the support offered to mums for breastfeeding.
UNICEF, set stringent standards for its sought after breastfeeding ‘baby friendly accreditation’ and maternity units must meet strict criteria.
The IRH CMU was awarded 100% in all categories.
“This is tremendous news for the CMU,” said Vicki Mazzoni, Midwifery Team Leader at the IRH. “It’s wonderful that the hard work of the all the staff has been recognised, particularly as this is an external audit.
“The CMU has been UNICEF accredited for a number of years already but every few years UNICEF reassesses units to make sure standards remain high. This year we were awarded 100%.”
Local mum, Laura Montgomery (30), from Greenock, gave birth at the CMU on the 9th June 2010. She received a lot of breastfeeding support from the midwives at the CMU and is breastfeeding beautiful little Chloe with ease.
Laure said: “the midwives were just great. They gave me so much support and encouragement both before Chloe was born and afterwards. Now Chloe can’t seem to get enough!”
