All pregnant women booked into the Community Midwife Units (CMUs) at the Vale of Leven, Inverclyde and Royal Alexandra Hospitals are to be offered H1N1 vaccinations.

They will be available at evening clinics held at Vale of Leven and Inverclyde Royal hospital sites on alternate Tuesdays between 5.30-8.30pm, and at the Royal Alexandra clinics will be held onThursdays between 5.30-8.30pm, and Saturdays from 10am to 12.30pm, all beginning on May 25

Medical staff will be actively encouraging women to be vaccinated to protect themselves and their babies.

Dr Syed Ahmed, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde’s Consultant in Public Health Medicine, said: “The vaccinations will not only protect the women during their pregnancy and for the following year but also for the first few months of the lives of their babies.

“Flu is normally a winter bug, but we don’t know when this strain will appear again.

“All women booked in during this month will receive a letter with a telephone number which they can use to book a time for their vaccination.

“It doesn’t matter what gestation of their pregnancy they are at, but the earlier the better.”

The H1N1 vaccine is a variation of the flu vaccine which has been available for more than 20 years.

Dr Ahmed emphasised that the vaccine will not harm unborn children: “There is more risk in not having the vaccine and catching the flu.

“Pregnant women and children are amongst the groups most vulnerable to this type of flu and medical staff from pregnancy services highly recommend that mothers-to-be accept the vaccine.”
