The ink was hardly dry on our latest press release about a sixth top award for the New Stobhill Hospital when news broke that the state-of-the-art facility has added yet another jewel to its crown!
This time the New Stobhill Hospital impressed judges of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) who awarded the building one of their sought after awards for architectural excellence.
The judges’ commented: “The hospital is located in an area with challenging social and health problems, and serves over 2000 patients a day. Externally the building is modest but well considered but the real joy lies inside.
“A linear atrium space divides treatment functions from consulting. This very simple diagram, expressed in both plan and section, makes the building particularly easy to navigate. The design has not stopped at the level of the layout drawing but has been rigorously and effectively carried through to all aspects of the building, particularly the waiting areas which are enlivened by a series of planted courtyards and real art installations.
“The overall spirit of the building is welcoming, warm and calm, which is largely down to the quite brilliant use of natural light.”
This latest gong follows hard on the heels of the “Best Designed Project” prize from the Public Private Finance Awards, also held this week.
Amongst the written comments in the “Book of the Night” were that the hospital can “stand comparison with the best public architecture anywhere across Europe.”
Margaret Campbell, Commissioning Manger for the New Stobhill, said:
“The hospital impresses everyone who comes into contact with it, staff, patients and obviously professionals involved in building design.
“Our design, construction and commission teams are delighted that once more the New Stobhill has received yet more national recognition.”
Earlier this year the New Stobhill was commended in the Civic Trust Awards’ medical and health service category.
And last year the New Stobhill Hospital scooped the “Building Better Healthcare” and Roses Grand Prix awards, the latter for the best new building outside London and Prix de la Prix, plus also lifting the top award in the Healthcare Category of the Glasgow Institute of Architects’ Annual Design Awards.
