Flying Doctor Service Wins Prestigious National Award

Scotland’s flying doctor service, which flies experienced accident and emergency or intensive care consultants to patients in remote and rural communities, has won a prestigious national award.

The Emergency Medical Retrieval Service (EMRS) has been awarded the Secondary Care Team of the Year Award in the BMJ Group Awards.

The award recognises hospital teams that demonstrate improved outcomes of medical and surgical conditions. The EMRS Team were given the award for their work in transforming the care and transfer of seriously ill and injured patients in remote and rural parts of the West of Scotland.

This prestigious award comes on the back of an announcement by the Health Secretary, Nicola Sturgeon, to extend the service to cover all of remote and rural Scotland.

Dr Stephen Hearns, one of the team’s Consultants, attended the glittering award ceremony in London. He was honoured to accept the award along with colleague Dr Alasdair Corfield on behalf of the Team.

He said: “We were delighted to have been nominated for this award and to actually win it was a great honour for the Team.

“The award reflects the work of the team over the past six years and also the teamwork with rural colleagues and the Scottish Ambulance Service.”

The EMRS provides rural clinical with 24 hour access to a consultant in emergency medicine or intensive care with specialist aeromedical training..

The EMRS team are able to respond, via plane or helicopter, within minutes of a request and can also provide specialist advice to rural clinicians.

EMRS is a collaboration between NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde and the Scottish Ambulance Service, funded by the Scottish Government.
