The Patient Library service at the Southern General Hospital has two very special reasons to celebrate this month.
Not only is it the 10th year since the service was introduced, but the WH Smith Trust and PLC have donated over 300 books for distribution. Not only will the Southern General benefit but also patients within the Victoria Infirmary and the Mansionhouse Unit.
The titles range from biographies through to thrillers and romantic novels.
Bryan Bannerman, Voluntary Services Manager for Acute Services which includes the Victoria Infirmary and Southern General Hospital, said:
“We are delighted that WH Smith has chosen the Victoria Infirmary and Southern General Hospital to make this donation. It is a fantastic initiative and one that will be used and enjoyed by many of our patients and staff.”
The hospital library service already has a collection of 5000 books, including talking books, plus CDs and games.
As well as choosing books from a trolley service, patients can also ask for books by genre, and this can include requests for tomes on topics such as sport, classic fiction and even cookery books.
Brian McDevitt, Manager of WH Smith store in the Victoria Infirmary said:
“We’re really excited to have the opportunity to support our local hospitals and help to create library facilities for patients and staff. It’s a great way for the staff at WH Smith to get involved with their local communities and help promote literacy.”
The ‘Books for Hospitals’ 2010 initiative will see 3,000 books donated to ten hospitals across the country this year.
