Children in East Dunbartonshire‘s St Paul’s Playgroup are all big smiles after winning a local competition on illustrating the importance of visiting the dentist.

As part of an ongoing programme to increase the number of children being registered at a dental practice and to raise awareness of the benefits from regular visits to the dentist, East Dunbartonshire Community Health Partnership’s Oral Health Action Team (OHAT) organised a poster competition for local playgroups and nurseries to coincide with National Smile Month earlier this year.

The response from local playgroups and nurseries was exceptional. However, St Paul’s entry was a clear winner and their entry will now be professionally printed and displayed in every dental practice across East Dunbartonshire, as well as being distributed to all other education, health and voluntary establishments.

Carrie Davidson, Health Improvement Practitioner (Oral Health), East Dunbartonshire CHP was delighted with the response to the competition and is keen to highlight the serious message behind it.

She said: “The theme of the poster competition was “going to this dentist”. This links to the Scottish Government HEAT target that 80% of children aged between three and five are registered with an NHS dentist by 2010/11.

“In continuing to raise awareness of the importance in attending the dentist, the East Dunbartonshire Oral Health Team agreed to invite the local pre-five education establishments to take part in a poster competition that would illustrate the importance of children being registered and regularly visiting their dentist.

“The competition took place during National Smile Month in May and June and all the entrants were invited to take part using any art materials they wished.

“We had a really positive response with many fantastic posters. However, the St Paul’s Playgroup entry was an overwhelming hit with the voters.”

Lorna Laming, St. Paul's Playgroup Manager, added: “Our children enjoy their daily toothbrushing routine. It's a fun part of their day which encourages discussion and awareness of oral hygiene and visiting their dentist at an early age."
