Ferguslies Favourite Tipple Breastmilk!

September 27, 2007 4:20 PM

Breastmilk has become one of the favourite tipples in Ferguslie Park, just ask the local breastfeeding group which is celebrating its first birthday today (Thursday, September 27).

Mums, and tots, are gathering at Ferguslie Community Nursery in Tannahill Centre to mark the first anniversary of the group, and local health visitors and midwives have also been invited.

One local mum, Kelly Morrow (22), found the group so helpful that she went on to complete the breastfeeding network helper training to help and support other mothers who want to breastfeed.

Kelly breastfed son Conanrio, now 11 months old, thanks to encouragement from the Ferguslie Park group.

She said: “I thought it was going to be hard to breastfeed because my sister had an awful time, she had problems and did not get the right help and support.

“But once I got started it was kind of easy. It is the easiest and cheapest way to feed your baby.

“No fuss, no hassle no bottles to make up and sterilise. I can give my baby a feed quickly when he cries instead of making him wait till I make up a bottle.

“He is now a very bright happy 11-month-old baby. I breastfed him nothing but breast milk till he was six months old. He has such a great wee personality and very healthy.”

Kelly went on:  “The best bit about coming to the group is we enjoy supporting other mums. We enjoy being sociable and having a laugh.

“We chat about our babies, our families, and all sorts of stuff. We started getting baby massage here too.

“And one of the best things is the hot home-made scones every Friday morning!”

Maria Laverty, Infant Feeding Promoter from the NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde Health Inequalities project, added:

“Kelly got the right support from the very beginning. The secret was that she started coming here when she was pregnant, and has been coming every week since. Then she knew everyone and that makes it easier to ask questions.”

New mums, especially pregnant women, are always welcome to come along to ask questions and seek advice, and the group meets every Friday in Ferguslie Community Nursery, Tannahill Centre, Ferguslie Park, between 10.30 am and 12 noon.

The Ferguslie Park group is part of a wider network of successful support groups throughout Renfrewshire, and a complete list is attached.
