NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde has launched a brand new sexual, emotional and reproductive health service for the people of East Renfrewshire at Barrhead Health Centre. The new Sandyford East Renfrewshire has been officially opened by Eastwood MSP Ken Macintosh.
The fifth in a series of satellite clinics of NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde's award-winning Sandyford Initiative, Sandyford East Renfrewshire is the first such "hub" to be opened in East Renfrewshire. From its base at Barrhead, it provides expert sexual, emotional and reproductive health care for men, women and young people living throughout East Renfrewshire.
Bringing together a wide range of services under one roof, the project represents a substantial investment and commitment to improving sexual and reproductive health within East Renfrewshire. A number of groundbreaking services are being made available under one roof for the first time at Sandyford East Renfrewshire, including counselling, free internet access and a library.
Dr Alison Bigrigg, Clinical Director of NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde's Sandyford Initiative, said: "This new service extends the provision of sexual, reproductive and emotional healthcare within East Renfrewshire. Instead of having a number of different facilities on different sites, the official opening of Sandyford East Renfrewshire today means services are available three full days a week and all on one site.
"We've assembled a fantastic team to work here and everyone is enormously committed to bringing the best of the care we provide at the city centre Sandyford to Barrhead."
Eastwood MSP Ken Macintosh, who is officially opening the new facility, said: "Too many Scots find it difficult to talk about their health and even more difficult to talk about their sexual health.
"Having the Sandyford clinic available locally, right here in our community, will break down some of these barriers and I hope will lead to a marked improvement in the sexual, reproductive and emotional health care and support available here in East Renfrewshire."
The new facility brings together and builds upon the existing family planning and genitourinary medicine services which were based at different clinic and health centre sites around East Renfrewshire. In addition, there is also specialist medical gynaecology, generic and psychosexual counselling.
Access to information is a vital part of Sandyford East Renfrewshire. Among the range of other services on offer are advice, information, counselling, free internet access and a library. The library service is linked to East Renfrewshire Council and provides books and leaflets on all aspects of health in a relaxed and sensitive environment.
Care and support for sexually transmitted infections, on-site testing and treatment, advice, information and support will all be available free and confidentially at Sandyford East Renfrewshire. The facility is the fifth in the series of Sandyford "hubs" to be opened across NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde.
For several years, the majority of the locally-based clinics have specialised in reproductive care for women and until the opening of Sandyford Southeast in Govanhill in 2005, there was very little for men or young people outside the city centre. Sandyford East Renfrewshire is part of an effort to expand the range of sexual health care available, moving on from the traditional focus on reproductive care for women and beginning to reach more men and young people.
Dedicated help can be accessed at priority sessions for men, women and young people. Free condoms and lubricant, contraception, emergency contraception, specialist menopause and gynaecology clinics and a youth priority service are also provided. Sandyford East Renfrewshire is open Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays, offering help on an appointment and drop-in basis.
