A decision has been taken today (Monday November 5th) temporarily to suspend planned orthopaedic surgery at the Southern General Hospital.
This precautionary measure, which has been taken by both orthopaedic surgeons and our infection control team, is in light of an increase in the number of wound infections found among post-operative patients. There are a number of different types of bacteria causing these infections.
A thorough investigation is underway, and patients set to undergo surgery within the next 48 hours are being informed that their operations are being re-scheduled.
Emergency orthopaedic operations continue to be performed within the hospital while investigations continue.
We have apologised to those patients affected for any inconvenience, but must stress that patient safety remains the over-riding consideration.
