A new service to help residents make hospital visits in the evening starts up this week.
Residents making hospital visits can call ahead and book a door-to-door bus service that will take them to one of four hospitals and back again.
And the free service links up East Renfrewshire with the Southern General; Victoria Infirmary; Royal Alexandra and Hairmyres hospitals for visits in the evening between 6 and 8pm.
East Renfrewshire community health and care partnership convener, Councillor Douglas Yates, said: “For many residents getting to and from hospital in the evening can be a difficult job. At any time of the year it can be a problem but especially in the cold and dark winter months.
“That’s why this service is critically important as a link between patients in hospital and their families at home. It means families can get to hospital at visiting times and that residents in hospital know their relatives are getting home safely,” he added.
Using community transport, all local residents are eligible, but the service will prioritise people who are older, disabled or on low incomes
Chris Drapper, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde’s transport projects manager, said: “This service not only offers a reliable option, but in designing the project we took on board worries around travelling unaccompanied at night.
“This scheme is a clear example of how NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde and its partners are looking at imaginative ways of improving transport options for our patients and their visitors.
“We are well aware of the challenges that getting to and from hospital can present to those who use our service, and finding innovative ways of tackling these issues is a key concern,” he added.
To book the East Renfrewshire evening visitor service call the booking hotline on 0845 128 4027. Phone lines open 1-4pm (Mon-Thurs) 1-3.30pm (Friday).
The evening visitor service is a partnership between East Renfrewshire Community Health and Care Partnership, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, Strathclyde Passenger Transport; Glasgow community transport and East Renfrewshire Council for Voluntary Service.
