NHSGGC Review Eases Weekend Parking Issues for Staff

November 28, 2007 12:22 PM

A new flat fee of £1 per day for daytime weekend parking in staff car parks is being introduced at four Glasgow hospital sites. From early December, staff working at the Western Infirmary, the Victoria Infirmary, Gartnavel hospitals and the Yorkhill hospitals (the Queen Mother’s Hospital and the Royal Hospital for Sick Children) on weekends will pay this reduced daily fee.
This change is being introduced as part of an internal review of car parking charges on the four sites. Experience on these sites has shown that, with fewer hospital staff in over the weekends, car parks are far less congested than during the week. We also know that staff face greater challenges in getting to work by public transport at weekends.
Director of Corporate Planning and Policy, Catriona Renfrew said: “When we launched the Car Parking policy, we committed ourselves to holding an internal review within the first year of its implementation.
“This has recently begun and the new weekend parking arrangements for staff is our immediate response to some of the issues the review has identified.
“The roll out of phase two at Stobhill Hospital and the Southern General was last week temporarily delayed to take into account the publication of the national review of car parking guidance, due this week, and to allow more time for the full implementation of NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde’s green transport policy.
“While we remain absolutely committed to using charging as a way to ensure our patients and their relatives can park, this change, based on our own review, underlines our intention to develop and refine our policy as issues arise to try to respond to staff concerns.”
“ Ensuring patients and their carers have access to parking is the key aim of our policy but as staff car parks have not been so congested at weekends, it makes sense to respond straight away by opening up weekend parking for staff, within these designated areas.
The first phase of NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde’s car parking policy was implemented at the four hospital sites. The normal arrangements and tariff of charges will continue to apply at these sites between Monday and Friday. Staff who hold existing car park permits are unaffected by these charges.
