Local Sexual Health and Relationships Conference for Renfrewshire

October 12, 2007 9:27 AM

A pioneering event focusing on sexual health and relationships is throwing the spotlight on sexual health services in Renfrewshire. This Thursday (October 11th), a Sexual Health and Relationships conference is being held at Reid Kerr College in Paisley. The event will bring together experts in sexual health with managers and practitioners from a number of different professions from throughout Renfrewshire.

Alongside colleagues from Renfrewshire Council and NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde’s Sandyford Initiative, Renfrewshire Community Health Partnership (CHP) is hosting the event as part of a plan to shape the future of sexual health services locally. Professionals with an interest in sexual health will spend the day sharing ideas on how best to provide sexual health care for people in Renfrewshire in the coming months and years.

Renfrewshire CHP’s Head of Planning and Health Improvement, Fiona MacKay, hopes the event will make a real contribution to shaping local services: “The two main aims of Thursday’s conference are to inform delegates about the progress that’s been made in Renfrewshire in providing sexual health care and to hear the delegates’ own views in return. We’re hoping this conference will be a two-way street and that there will be a real sharing of ideas.

“Like elsewhere in Scotland, Renfrewshire has to tackle the spread of sexually transmitted infections, including HIV, and the problem of unplanned pregnancies. A local Sexual Health Action Plan is being prepared, setting out local priorities, and it’s important that the people on the ground who know the area best can contribute to that.”

Councillor Derek Mackay, Leader of Renfrewshire Council, said: "Scotland's national sexual health strategy, Respect and Responsibility, sets out the key responsibilities for local authorities, the voluntary sector and the NHS. Improving sexual health and well-being is a key priority here in Renfrewshire and we are committed to implementing the national strategy. This Conference will help us and our partners build upon the progress that's been made so far and to identify where we need to focus our efforts in future."

A number of improvements to the sexual health service are already being developed in Renfrewshire, including a forthcoming Sandyford “hub” clinic, which will deliver comprehensive sexual, reproductive and emotional health care five days a week in the heart of Paisley at the Russell Institute.

David Leese, the Director of Renfrewshire CHP, hopes Thursday’s conference will mark a milestone for the area: “Since the Community Health Partnership was created, staff from the NHS and from the local authority have worked very closely together to plan and deliver services for our population. For all of us within the CHP, improving the health and wellbeing of the people of Renfrewshire is a top priority, and sexual health and relationships are key to achieving that.

“There’s a wealth of experience and knowledge in both the local authority and the health service here and I hope Thursday’s conference in Paisley will bring together some of the county’s most dedicated professionals.”
