First Impressions of New Barrhead Health and Social Care Centre Unveiled

October 31, 2007 10:01 AM

The first artist’s impressions of the new Barrhead Health and Social Care Centre have been unveiled.
Councillor Douglas Yates, Chair of the East Renfrewshire Community Health and Care Partnership (CHCP) which is responsible for the development of the new centre, said: “Although design work is at a very early stage, I am delighted that we now have something visual which gives an impression of what the new centre could look like and also gives the public an idea of the size and scale of the new £18m facility.
“We want a local health and social centre that is fit for the 21st century and this is a major step towards achieving a modern and attractive new facility.”
Julie Murray, Director of East Renfrewshire Community Health and Care Partnership, said: “Over the last few months our design team have been working with local community groups to hear first hand their views on what they would like to new centre to look like. A key priority is to ensure access to as wide a range of services as possible. We also know that people want a bright, attractive, building with lots of natural light and space to make the centre as welcoming as possible.
“Obviously a lot more detailed work needs to be done over the next few months to finalise the layout and design, however these first impressions help bring the centre to life and will give people an idea of what we are striving to provide for the local community.”
The new health and social care centre will provide a wide range of services including dental services, physiotherapy, podiatry (foot care), community nursing and social work services.
It will also provide accommodation for three GP practices, day-care and support services for older people and community mental health services.
Construction work on the new centre, which will be built on the site of the former Carlibar Primary School is expected to start in late 2008 and be completed during 2010. A programme of maintenance and repair work will be carried out on the existing centre to ensure that it can continue to operate until the new centre is completed.
