The go ahead has been given to develop plans for a new Health and Social Care Centre in Renfrew following the approval of a funding package by the Scottish Executive and NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde
The Scottish Executive and NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde have both allocated £15m to enable plans for the development of two new health and social care centres in Barrhead and Renfrew to be taken forward.
Renfrewshire Council, who are key partners in the development of the Renfrew Centre, will also contribute funding towards the new centre.
David Leese, Director of the Renfrewshire Community Health Partnership (CHP) on behalf of NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, said: "This announcement is great news for the local community who are keen to see a new facility developed which fully meets the needs of patients and staff.
"We are now able to take forward plans to develop a larger, purpose-built Centre that will enable us to provide a wider range of services, including minor surgery and additional nurse-led clinics, in a modern and attractive environment."
It is proposed that new Renfrew Health and Social Centre, will be built on a site that lies between Renfrew Town Centre and the Braehead development.
Councillor Tommy Williams, Convener of Renfrewshire Council's Community and Family Care Policy Board and a member of the NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde Board, said: ""This development will provide a major boost to public services in Renfrew and the surrounding area.
"It also gives us the opportunity to bring local health and social care services together under the one roof. This will make it easier and quicker for local people to access the services they require regardless of whether these are provided by NHS or Council staff."
The new Centre will provide a wide range of local health and social care services. These include GP practices, minor surgery, physiotherapy, podiatry (foot care) services, health visitor and district nursing teams, social work and home care services. It will also provide accommodation for a number of patient and carer support groups, community groups and voluntary organisations.
Renfrewshire CHP is keen to work with local people and community groups to identify what other services and facilities could be based within the new Centre.
A new Project Board has been established to take forward the detailed planning and development of the new Centre. Construction work is expected to start during 2007 and the centre is due to be completed by 2009.
