The go ahead has been given to develop plans for a new Health and Social Care Centre in Barrhead following the approval of a funding package by the Scottish Executive and NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde.

The Scottish Executive and NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde have both allocated £15m to enable plans for the development of two new health and social care centres in Barrhead and Renfrew to be taken forward.

East Renfrewshire Council, who are key partners in the development of the Barrhead centre, will also contribute funding towards the new centre.

Tim Eltringham, Head of Health and Community Care for the East Renfrewshire Community Health and Care Partnership (CHCP) – the joint Partnership between NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde and East Renfrewshire Council which will oversee the development of the new Barrhead centre - said: "This announcement is great news for the local community who have been keen to see a new facility developed for some time as the existing health centre no longer meets the needs of patients and staff.

""We are now able to take forward plans to develop a larger, purpose-built centre that will enable us to provide a wider range of services in a modern and attractive environment."

It is proposed that the new centre will be built on the Carlibar Primary School site.

Councillor Danny Collins, Deputy Leader of East Renfrewshire Council and Chair of the East Renfrewshire Community Health and Care Partnership, said: "The development of this new centre forms a key part of the council's wider regeneration plan for the town of Barrhead.

"It gives us an opportunity to bring local health and social care services together under the one roof. This will make it easier and quicker for local people to access the services they need regardless of whether these are provided by NHS or council staff. It is also an excellent example of the type of joint working that the new CHCP has been set up to develop across East Renfrewshire."

The new centre will accommodate a wide range of local health and social care services including the three Barrhead GP practices, community nursing teams, day-care and support services for older people and community mental health services.

East Renfrewshire CHCP is also keen to work with local people and community groups to identify what other services and facilities could be based within the new Centre.

A new Project Board has been established to take forward the detailed planning and development of the new Centre. It is hoped that, following the approval of the full business case and planning permission, site preparation will start during 2007 with the centre due to be completed during 2010/11.
